The Caleb Group was founded in 1992 by Warren and Joan Sawyer and Debra Nutter. They created the nonprofit The Caleb Group in response to the lack of good, well managed, secure affordable housing they saw in the rental housing market and the belief that residents of affordable housing need additional assistance to stabilize and advance. Warren and Debbie brought to this effort a combined 50 years of real estate development and management.
The first Caleb property, Valley View, was opened in Bangor, Maine in 1994. Since that time The Caleb Group has steadily grown to include 26 properties which are home to approximately 4,000 people. Caleb has also been a partner in the development of special housing projects including: Abbott House a transitional residence for women and their children with Crittenton Women’s Union and a domestic violence shelter in Nicaragua.
Since the founding, The Caleb Group has steadily acquired, preserved, developed and managed affordable housing communities in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut. As part of the organization’s mission to provide additional assistance beyond housing each community has a Community Opportunity Center and an on-site Service Coordinator. The Community Opportunity Center has a community room and a computer center with computers for use by residents. The Service Coordinator works to develop and nurture a sense of community within the property, provides onsite supportive, educational and enriching programs as well as works to connect residents to supportive services in the larger community.
The Caleb Group believes that a clean, safe, stable living environment is integral to a stable life and that by working with residents through our service coordinators to create a sense of community Caleb can become a positive, supportive factor in helping people stabilize and with time get out of poverty.
Since 1991, The Food Project has built a national model of engaging young people in personal and social change through sustainable agriculture. Each year, we work with 120 teenagers and thousands of volunteers to farm on 70 acres in eastern Massachusetts in the towns and cities of Beverly, Wenham, Lynn, Boston, and Lincoln. We consider our hallmark to be our focus on identifying and transforming a new generation of leaders by placing teens in increasingly responsible roles, with deeply meaningful work.
Food from our farms is distributed through our community supported agriculture programs and farmers’ markets, and donated to local hunger relief organizations. The young people working in our programs participate in all of these distribution streams, giving them valuable job experiences and a personal connection to our food system and issues of food justice.

Primarily known for classic rock concerts featuring headliners like Kansas and Foreigner, the surprisingly grand Lynn Auditorium also hosts comics, including Bill Cosby and Howie Mandel, as well as community dance recitals and family movies.
Built in 1948 inside Lynn City Hall the 2,100-seat auditorium fell into disrepair in the late 1980s. In 2002, James Marsh, the community development director and general manager of Lynn Auditorium, realized the potential for the immense space and started showing family movies there. He saw it as a way to bring the community together while giving kids something to do.
“The kids came down in droves for free movies and popcorn. They loved it,” he recalls. Under Marsh’s leadership and guidance, the auditorium underwent an extreme makeover, which included replacing everything from the seat cushions, the carpet, the curtains and rigging to the house lights and the sound system. The refurbished auditorium celebrated its grand reopening in October 2006. Marsh envisions bigger and better things for the auditorium. “I see it going further and Mayor Kennedy sees it going further, too. She’s one of our biggest supporters and patrons. Ideally, she would like to see it air conditioned.”
The lack of air conditioning keeps the auditorium closed in the summer months, but it is packed from October through early June.
Marsh hopes that people who come to Lynn to see a great show in this world-class auditorium will stay for the city’s other amenities. As he points out, “We’re right on the water; Lynn Woods is bigger than Central Park; we’ve got the Rock Hill Observatory; there’s a brand new sporting facility at Manning Field; and we have one of the best golf courses in Massachusetts.”
